Thoughts on the new Harry Potter film July 28, 2009

It was good.
Really good.
Dark.
Funny.
Cute in places. (I’m a sucker for romance.)
Oh my goodness, I adore Snape. Just because, ya know, he’s Snape. And he’s awesome.
But…
Bellatrix was…eghad, she was amazing. Just wow.
I’ll admit that I nearly had a heart attack during the movie. Anyone who’s seen this movie will know what I’m talking about when I say “the hand.” When the scene with “the hand” happened, my sister grabbed my elbow and I emitted a very strange, very low garbled sort of noise. Believe me, we weren’t the only people in the theater who had some sort of reaction. * shudders at memory *
And Draco… Hehe. I never could take him seriously for some reason, and I still don’t.
Confession March 20, 2009

Yes, I have a confession to make. See, I really don’t like Twilight. (Or New Moon, or Eclipse, or Breaking Dawn.) Actually, I rather loathe those books. Anybody who’s been reading this blog already knew that.
So I went to see the Twilight movie not too long after it came out. It was okay. Good for laughs. But something happened to me there. I developed a crush on Robert Pattinson. I couldn’t help it! He was cute. And he had such awesome sunglasses. I admit to hissing “Oh my gosh, look at him!” to my friend a couple of times.
And all of this means that I am so going to see New Moon when it comes out. I could care less about the story or about how the movie is made or whatever. I’m going to see it for Robert Pattinson. Problem is that Edward isn’t in a whole lot of New Moon. Maybe the script writers will think of girls like me and decide to put more Edward in. Maybe… Probably not. I can hardly believe that I actually want more Edward. Well, more Robert Pattinson anyway. Edward can just go…sparkle in a meadow for all I care.
So yes. I am a very non-Twilight person who will go see New Moon for the actor playing one of my least favorite characters in the history of books. Dude, I would even go see him in the horror that is Breaking Dawn.
And there’s my confession of the day.

(That title is my song. I even have a tune for it.)
I realized today that I have a lot of holds at the library. I wonder if there is a hold limit… Just checked how many I have. Twenty. Heh. I had no idea I had requested so many. Well, I fully intend to read all of them. I really do. And I probably will because all of them are books I want to read.
So last night I watched a totally amazing movie called Fireproof. No, it wasn’t the best made movie you’ll ever watch. The acting isn’t Oscar-worthy. But it was an amazing movie. Totally had me crying. (Speaking of the Oscars… I am so not watching them tonight. Never watched them. Never will. Besides, I heard that “Singin’ in the Rain” is on tonight. Methinks I will watch that instead.)
I’m reading How to Be Popular by Meg Cabot. Sorry, but all her books sound same to me. Not that I’ve read that many. I’ll finish this book even though I think it’s pretty lame, but I don’t expect to pick up one of her books in the near future. There are other things that are worth reading. But it’s sad that I don’t really like her books. I’ve been in the mood for some actually good chicklit. Not having much luck. I’m also (re)reading The Bad Beginning. It’s…interesting. I haven’t really formed an opinion. But I can’t deny that Lemony Snicket isn’t funny. ‘Cause he really is.
Great and Dramatic Undertaking… I’ll have to shorten that to GaDU. Hehe. I just thought I would bring that up since you might hear more about GaDU in the future. (If you didn’t know, GaDU is splitting one of my novels into three.)
I was at a lock-in Friday not, and it was a lot of fun. Seriously. A boy in my youth group and I had two of the most epic conversations ever. The first one took place during capture the flag while we were guarding the flag.
Me: It’s SO cold.
Him: Seriously.
Me: *touches nose* I can’t feel my nose.
Him: *touches nose* I can’t feel mine either.
Me: Well, yours is still there.
Him: So’s yours.
*both crack up laughing*
Look, it was two in the morning when we said that. Of course we thought it was hysterical. And then we had this conversation while playing Sardines. We were looking near the woods for the person in hiding. (It was about four in the morning at this point.)
Him: I swear that a wild animal is going to jump out at me at any second.
Me: You’re the guy so you’re getting between me and the wild animal.
Him: Sorry, but no.
Me: You’d so fail at the knight-in-shining-armor business.
Him: Proud of it.
And on that note I shall go torture myself by reading more of How to Be Popular. (Just shoot me and throw me in a grave with daffodils growing over it. Kidding. Totally kidding. Maybe…)

I’ll admit that I am depressed that it is Tuesday. See, I really wish it were tomorrow. Yes, I wish it were Wednesday. Smack in the middle of the week. Normally, I’m not overly fond of Wednesdays. Tomorrow will be good though. Tomorrow the only TV show I faithfully watch is kicking off with its fifth season. LOST begins tomorrow. I am so excited. I judge TV shows the way I judge books. Good dialogue, plotting, well-rounded characters. This show has all of that. Okay, I will stop gushing about a TV show. It honestly feels weird to do that. I feel like I’ve committed a crime against books or something.
Oh! I can gush about a book. I’ve been meaning to do it ever since I finished rereading it earlier this month. Les Miserables. My goodness. That book is so amazing. I’ve read the unabridged version, and it did tend to ramble off on tangents a bit. Mostly notably, the sewers. *shudder* Well, I kind of chickened out this time and read the abridged version. What? It’s the same thing only without all those tangents. I was in the mood to just get into it and read.
I honestly can’t pick a favorite character. I mean, how am I suppose to? It’s a four way tie between Jean Valjean, Javert, Marius, and Eponine. I sympathize the most with Jean Valjean. (I cried for him more than once.) Javert is a villain, yes I know. But he’s such a good villain. Marius… *giggle* Marius is the love of my life. Well, one of them anyway. I pity Eponine. I really do. She was really rather pathetic, if you ask me. But I most definitely pitied her. She was so much easier to relate to than Cosette. Cosette’s another story. I don’t like her much. I mean, I like some things about her, but I always end up loathing her toward the end. Besides that, I never felt like I really ever got to know her character.
I watched “The Princess of Thieves” with my siblings last night. Okay… What I want to know is who the heck wrote that dialogue? Oh. My. Goodness. I was cracking up the whole time because the words coming out of the character’s mouths were so cliché. Not to mention the cliché characters… My mental image of Will Scarlet has been ruined forever now as well. (Darn you movie people.) I must needs go reread Robin McKinley’s “Outlaws of Sherwood” to get back my mental image of him.
Tonight it’s supposed to get the coldest it’s been in Florida since 2003. It’s supposed to get below freezing tonight. I think I’ll need tall socks, flannel pants, three shirts, and six blankets. It’s true. 60 degrees is cold to me. 50 is freezing. Anything below is like death weather. Blame my parents. I was born up north, but they decided to move here when I was one. So it’s their fault I’m a Florida girl inside and out.
I just realized something. I have to redo several of those pages on my sidebar. Le sigh. I’m not doing that now for two reasons. One, I don’t feel like it now. Two, I’m too lazy to do it now. However, I am about to update my links. I need to take a few people off and people a few more on. Knowing me, I’ll post this post and totally forget.
You want to know something else? I have had this theme forever! I want a new one. I really do. But there aren’t any that I particularly like. Well, there are. But they’re being used.
For that reason, I have considered moving to Blogger. But I probably won’t. I’ve very attached to WordPress.
One more thing… I posted a two scenes on the “Snippets” page. Be warned: I think they are the fluffiest things I have written in all my sixteen years. I mean, they’re shamelessly fluffy. Funny thing is, I wrote one of them while chatting with Maribeth and Danielle one night on Gmail. Their reactions were…amusing. Email me at starzjess[at]gmail[dot]com for the password.
the Twilight movie November 29, 2008
Posted by Jess in movies.7 comments
So, this movie was rather disappointing. I mean, it was cheesy. But I usually like cheesy. I adore chick flicks. Ever After is one of my favorite movies. (Shame on you if you haven’t seen it.) It’s made of awesome. It’s a romance. It’s based on Cinderella. It has a rebellious prince and a courageous scullery maid. The characters fall in love in a matter of days. The romance is adorable. There’s villains. (The evil stepmother was one awesome villain, by the way.) And best of all, there’s a happy ending. Yes, Ever After is cheesy, but cheesy in a very good way. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. It’s so good. Even my younger brother likes it. And he doesn’t do romance.
Anyway…
Twilight was cheesy in a bad way. Really. I mean, when Edward calls Bella a spider monkey… I’m sorry. I cracked up. The way he said it killed me. It was cheesy in a bad way.
I was way disappointed by the meadow scene. Where was Eddie-Baby’s incandescent chest and scintillating arms? Where, I ask you, where?! I had been looking forward to laughing at it.
And speaking of Edward…
Why the heck did he look like a psychopath with lipstick? You can try to deny it all you want, but he looked like a psychopath with lipstick on. There are no two ways about it. This isn’t a matter of opinion. This is a matter of what was on that movie screen.
Poor Robert Pattinson. He really is a cool guy. Too bad he ended up playing one of the most un-cool guys ever. (Wait. That made no sense. Technically speaking, Edward is cool. Ah, well. You know what I mean.)
I wasn’t expecting to like this movie. I had been hoping that I would be pleasantly surprised by it. I wasn’t. See, I had thought before that the movie would be better than the book because there would be no incessant, “Oh, Edward, I love you sooo. You’re so bee-yoo-tee-ful. I want to spend forever with you and get whatever I want because I am Bella and I am special and girls want to be me.” I laughed at those parts of the books. And then it wasn’t in the movie for me to laugh at. I was feeling rather deprived.
But you know what I did get? I got this awesome line. “You’re skin is pale white… I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE!” I’m sorry. It was funny. I started saying that to people I know just to see how they’d react. And that whole exchange that Eddie-Baby and Bella had when he was trying to get her to say “vampire” was so giggle-inducing. No, not in the swoony way. More in the how-on-earth-did-they-act-out-this-scene-without-laughing sort of way.
What on earth was up with the tree thing? Well… The trees were up, I guess. (Sorry, corny joke. Danielle is rubbing off on me.
)
Nearly every time darling Eddie-Baby graced the screen with his presence, fangirls squealed in delight. I’ll admit that I would swoon if The Goose Girl was a movie and a certain person was playing Geric. But I would not squeal in a public theater. I would with my friends. I would swoon in public, but I would not squeal in public. No. I just don’t do that.
And then girls squealed when Jacob came on the screen. Ew. He’s even worse than Edward if you ask me. I don’t know why. I mean, Jacob isn’t a stalker, but he’s still more annoying. (Oh, right. He’s sixteen. I forgot. He’s allowed to be annoying. Whatever.) His hair scared me. Seriously. He had some scary hair going on. It was pretty girly. Ick.
As for the characters and their respective actors…
Bella: Too pretty. But a good actress. She was so awesome in Speak.
Eddie-Baby: Two words. Psychopath. Lipstick. But Pattinson rocks hardcore.
Emmett: What part of dark curly hair doesn’t the director understand? *shriek of rage*
Jasper: Eh, not much to say because, well, he didn’t say much in the movie. Besides that, he so wasn’t my Jasper.
Alice: She was good. I’ll admit it. She was good.
Esme: Same as Jasper.
Carlisle: Pictured him younger for some reason. Not my Carlisle. Not at all.
James: Oh, James rocked! Too bad he got almost no screen time. Sheesh.
Laurent: Not my Laurent. Sorry. I just didn’t picture him with dreds.
Victoria: I didn’t see any bright red hair on her. Did you? Though, her hair was pretty. Even if it wasn’t bright enough.
Twilight-ly yours,
Leigha
High School Musical 3…they should’ve stopped at one… October 27, 2008
Posted by Jess in movies, rant.5 comments
On Friday night, I witnessed something shocking/hysterical/High School Musical-ly. In other words, I saw High School Musical 3….
I was walking through the mall with a good friend of mine, keeping a good distance behind her little sister and her giggling group of friends. The theater is situated in the center of the (rather large) mall, so it took about twenty minutes or so to get there from the car. Normally, it wouldn’t have taken twenty minutes, but we got distracted by something that was truly hilarious. *
We bought our tickets and rode the escalator up to the theater area. We were given a ridiculous amount of money so we could buy ridiculously priced popcorn, soda, and the like. We got there a little early so we could pick good seats. Once situated, we began talking about what was going to happen in the movie. I guess the people behind us got tired of our snark and asked us to be quiet. (First of all, we were whispering. It’s not our fault if our cranky neighbor was eavesdropping. Second of all, the previews hadn’t even started yet.)
Several previews went by. (Most of which we ignored. We’re not really the biggest fan of previews as most of them are stupid.) Finally, the movie began, and several girls squealed. Someone shouted, “Zach Efron is so hot!” It was rather frightening.
Well, I made it through the movie alive. Though at one point my eyes practically bugged out of my head. What? It was Troy’s fault. He did this uber-icky hip shaking thing during one of the songs. It was so wrong. I still shudder just thinking about.
So it wasn’t exactly a bad movie. (Though, I don’t really think it could be called a good one either.) The best way I can describe is that it’s High School Musical. Awkward dialogue at times, annoying singing voices, cardboard characters, and a plot that’s not exactly enthralling. But, hey. It’s High School Musical. It’s not supposed to be. Doesn’t mean I liked it a whole lot. I mean, this is the third one. They should’ve stopped at one. And you want to know something? There’s going to be more than three. Yeah, you heard me right. In this third one a few new characters were introduced, and it’s my understanding that they will be the main characters in upcoming movies. Is this true? Gee, I don’t know. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s true, and I think my mom said it was in the paper. (I really should go ask if she still has the article. Or I could just Google it…)
Okay, now I need to make some statements. There will be spoilers.
Oh my goodness, are you kidding me! Can they think of nothing better for Sharpay to do than steal Troy for her own devious ends? Isn’t this what the last movie was about?
Ryan and Kelsi. Ah, sure. Okay. Well, they both wear hats and now they’re going to the same college. That just seemed kind of odd and out of left field when he asked her to the prom.
Oh, guess what! Troy deals what he wants to do and what his dad wants him to do. (Wait…wasn’t that in the first one? Ah, well. I guess Troy keeps forgetting whatever lessons he learned before so he can learn them again.)
So Gabriella wants to go to Stanford… Well, thank goodness that Troy darling didn’t go with her. However, he does end up going to college like thirty miles away. (Okay, so I might’ve been hoping that they would go to college on opposite ends of the country and never see each other. Who was I kidding? It’s Disney.)
I can never figure out what the deal is with Chad and Taylor’s relationship. They don’t appear to be official, so I guess that means that in all the time that transpires between the first and third movie they couldn’t bother to be? Well, if I were Taylor, I would’ve gotten sick of waiting around and would’ve gone to find myself an intellectual, non-jock. But that’s just me.
And the ending… Gah! Has a movie ever made you cringe? Just the whole curtain/jumping/graduation thing really scared me. (About half the theater actually started cracking up.)
Leigha
* We went in the mall through Barnes and Noble and saw a stand full of some book called the “Offical Twilight Movie Guide” or something. I forget. Point being, she randomly opened it to a page. What we saw about killed us. It was the most horrible picture of Robert Pattinson that I have ever seen. He had an open shirt on and he looked like he was about to start drooling or bloated or something. We seriously nearly died laughing. We closed the book and walked away…still laughing. I was crying, and my stomach was cramping. (It’s so much fun to laugh like that.) Anyway, I think (and I’m not completely sure) that this picture was on page 72. I’m sure you’ve seen this book at your local bookstore. If you’re ever in desperate need of a laugh…
On Romance: Part Two October 24, 2008
Posted by Jess in books, movies.12 comments
This post has spoilers for all of Shannon Hale’s currently published books. If you haven’t read them, go do yourself a favor and read them. That being said…
You can’t deny that Shannon Hale writes wonderful romance. (Okay, you could deny it, but I would have to wonder what’s wrong with you.) I mean, her romances are realistic. If you really think about it, realistic (and good) romance is hard to come by. (Like the romances in The Luxe and Rumors. Not realistic and quite annoying. Of course, I’ll end up reading Envy because I read its predecessors, and the cover will certainly be gorgeous, and then I won’t be able to resist it.) Anyway, all of Shannon Hale’s couples were friends first. I can’t say that I know a whole lot about the dating game, but I do know that being friends first is a good way to go.
So first of all there’s my favorite couple—Isi and Geric. (The latter is my greatest fictional love.) I smile and giggle every single time I read the first two scenes they have together. I mean, Geric’s so sweet and bumbling and completely adorable. And then his proposal at the end of The Goose Girl. I distinctly remember my very first reaction to when he said, “Will you have me?” It was a lot of giggling and a desire to tell Isi that if she didn’t marry him, I’d gladly do it for her. And we can’t forget that he asked he could kiss her. He asked. He gets a million points for that alone. Moving on the Enna Burning, there’s the famous “crumble scene.” I swoon just thinking about it. “I would crumble if I lost you.” He really, really loves her.
Enna and Finn are tumultuous. But so perfect for each other. I love Finn and all, but more in a brotherly sense. I love his relationship with Enna though. He’s so sweet and steady, and that’s exactly what Enna needs after everything she’s been through. “All I ever wanted is to be near you.” That’s all he ever wanted. Geez, I’m going to start tearing up here in a second. Oh, and there’s this line I’ve always loved in River Secrets. The line that ends with “his eyes full of Enna.” So cute. (I’m smiling like an idiot at this particular moment in time.)
But Razo and Dasha win as cutest couple. Definitely. The ending of River Secrets feels so dreamlike, and I love that the last word of the book is “kiss.” One of my favorite scenes is when Razo sees Dasha’s ankles and meditates upon them. Or that part when Razo tells Dasha he likes her only after listing all his favorite foods. Oh, that Razo. (Also in River Secrets, I thought the Talone/Megina romance was hysterically wonderfully. I hope to hear something more about in Forest Born.)
Miri and Peder. Well, I haven’t read Princess Academy in a while. (I’ve been meaning to reread it.) I do remember liking that the book didn’t end with them getting engaged or something. It ended on happy and hopeful note for them. (But I defy anyone who says they didn’t get together.)
I really have only one thing that I can say about Jane and Mr. Nobley. It was about time.
Dashti and Tegus just make me laugh. I love reading the scenes when she’s talking to him while she’s in the tower. Tegus is such a nut. (In a good way of course.) I mean, he did sing a song about a bodiless piglet. And the scene where they compare their ankles… I burst out into giggles when I read that for the first time. Aw, and the scene where Tegus and Dashti are on horseback after she confronts Khasar. That was about as adorable as anything gets. And I love how Tegus doesn’t want Dashti to wear a veil at their wedding…
Hehe, Jack and Punzie. That was just funny.
And on a non-romance side note…
Tonight I am boldly and bravely going where millions of other people are going. I am going to see High School Musical 3. No, I am not spending my money on a ticket. I’m going because my friend’s younger sister is going for her birthday, and I was invited along. Well, tonight should prove to be interesting. Let’s hope I live. (I will seriously die if Troy and Gabriella get engaged or exchange promise rings or something. They are in high school. Most people don’t marry the people they date in high school. I just hope Disney is aware of that.)
Leigha, who is scared of Disney and thinks someone should write a novel about a group of misfits who take it over.
On romance: part one October 18, 2008
Posted by Jess in books, movies.8 comments
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while or know me on LRRH, you know that I’m a sap, a girl who probably puts the “hopeless” in “hopeless romantic.” I can’t help it. Well-written romance just makes me happy. I’ve decided that the fun thing about writing romance is getting to decide how two people who are perfect for each other find each other. And when you think about it, there are a million ways to make people meet. It’s such fun to write about people’s first reactions to seeing, meeting, and talking to that future soul mate when they first meet. In case you can’t tell, this post is going to be about romance.
Here come some spoilers for “Return of the King.”
Well, my mom and I are re-watching the “Lord of the Rings” (extended edition) movies together. (My mom adores them like I do. It’s the only fantasy she likes. Though, she did say that Book of a Thousand Days was an entirely lovely book.) So, like any romantic, I’ve always loved Aragorn and Arwen’s reunion at the end of “Return of the King.” I mean, there’s something so sweet about how he looks at her, like he can’t believe she’s really there. And then…big kiss! It makes me giggle. (By the way, have you noticed that Legolas looks like an angel in that scene? He really does. He’s got a halo like thing on.) Though we haven’t gotten to “Return of the King” yet I was already thinking about it. We’re still on “Fellowship of the Ring.” I’m pretty sure we’re going to finish it tonight. Another great romantic scene (which can only be found in the extended edition) is one between Faramir and Eowyn. The look on his face the first time he sees her is so cute. And then there’s this completely beautiful scene between them where she puts her head on his shoulder, and he rests his head on hers. He’s got this contented smile on his face. It makes me sigh. (I’m rather disappointed that they didn’t get a kiss in the movie. I mean, Aragorn and Arwen got all the kissing, but they didn’t kiss one time in the book. Whereas, Faramir and Eowyn did. Ah, well. You can’t have everything in a movie.) As much as I love those scenes, they aren’t my favorite scenes in the “Lord of the Rings” movies. Close, but not quite. There’s not much that can beat Eowyn’s, “I am no man.” Hah, yes! Love that line and scene.
If we’re going to talk about reading “Lord of the Rings,” I like Eowyn and Faramir’s relationship the best. It’s so much more developed than Aragorn and Arwen’s. (Arwen has, like, no personality in the book.) But in the movie Aragorn and Arwen’s relationship is my favorite. You can’t doubt that they’re madly in love. You want to sigh when they’re together. (Then you start to wonder where your Aragorn is, the one who’ll kiss you a on a romantic and slightly cliché kissing bridge.)
So, yes. This is my first post on romance. I have a few more planned, one on Eva Ibbotson’s romances, the romances in Shannon Hale’s books, the romance in Megan Whalen Turner’s books, and one of the romances I wrote. This should be fun.
Dramatics Concerning Books and Darcy’s Eyes August 14, 2008

So I just finished Undercover by Beth Kephart, and I loved it. Loved it. I think I’m going to go reread it right away. I might somehow be able to like it even more. (Or I’ll dislike it the second time around and wonder why I liked it in the first place) That actually happened to me a year or so ago. I decided to reread Annie, Between the States. I enjoyed reading it for a second time, but I didn’t like it half as much as the first time. The author’s writing style bothered me in places, and the ending was rather disappointing. (I must admit to laughing when Annie got together with that one guy. First, I thought it was rather tacky. Second, I saw it coming from literally page one, so I just went “Meh.”) Oh, dear. I’m starting to talk in parenthesis again. And I’m rambling again. I wanted to talk about Undercover but then I got to parenthesis. I swear this is the effect LRRH has on me. Very recently we went from character’s names to world domination in one page.
Oh, and I’d like to add to my Annie, Between the States comment. I just reread it for a third time not too long ago, and I think I liked it more than the second time. I think. I’m not sure how I feel about this book. Let’s just say that I like some parts, and then I don’t like other parts. Yeah.
Anyway…
I just watched the modern version of Pride and Prejudice. I enjoyed it more than I expected to. It wasn’t completely like the book, but that didn’t really bother me. I mean, in this version Mr. Collins ends up with Mary. Which, I think, is as it should be.
I’ve wanted to watch this ever since Taiger suggested it on LRRH. (Thanks, Taiger! And you’re right. Darcy does have lovely eyes. My sister and I didn’t swoon or anything, so don’t look so suspicious.
)
I have decided that within the next few days I am going to be brave and dare to read Dragon Flight and Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow. I can’t believe I’m being so dramatic about a couple of books. But, hey, if I didn’t have a sense of drama, I wouldn’t bother writing.
And speaking of writing, I’m taking another break from writing my novel after I finish the chapter I’m working on. This break will probably be a lot longer than my last one. My life got, um, rather dramatic/tumultuous as of late. Plus I’m starting school this Monday, and I’d like be as de-stressed as possible when I start. And writing combined with my life and impending junior year and learning to drive just isn’t going to work out, so I have absolutely no idea when I’ll get back to it. Probably when I settle into the school year and life returns to a semblance of normal.

To Finish Up on Disney… July 8, 2008
Posted by Jess in movies, rant.64 comments
Now, to finish up on my ranting and raving talk of animated Disney movies…
Mulan. She kicks butt. I’m okay with this movie. I neither love it nor hate it. What I like most about it is Mulan. Yes, she went to war, but not because she was some feminist who was constantly screeching about how she would never marry and wanted to move out of her parent’s home in order to be independent. Mulan went to the matchmaker so she could “bring her family honor.” Yes, Mulan totally failed at the matchmaker’s house, but that wasn’t really her fault. (Darn cricket.) She goes to war because she wants to save her father from going himself, not because she has some romantic ideals about it. My favorite parts of the movie happen at the training camp. The song “Be a Man,” (a song which I am so not guilty of walking around singing. *shifty eyes*) the scene where she goes swimming in a lake, and the dragon. I love the dragon. Oh, and there’s this great part where a shirtless Shang shoots an arrow to the top of a pole and says something a little like this…
Shang: Mao, retrieve the arrow.
Mao: I’ll retrieve that arrow, and I’ll do it with my shirt on.
That cracks me up every time.
I think I rather like Aladdin. Well, the movie Aladdin. I’m not sure how I feel about the main character. I guess he’s okay. I really like the genie. Jasmine’s cool too, I suppose. I think I’m a little against Aladdin because he sort of fits my mental image of Eugenides from The Thief, and I just don’t want to associate one of the best characters ever created with a Disney dude. So, yeah. Oh, you know who else is a cool character? The magic carpet. Yes, yes, yes. Maybe it’s technically not a character, but it’s a flying carpet and that’s enough for me. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted a magic carpet. I really can’t tell you why as I have a fear of heights. Anyway, I’m supposed to be talking about the movie… Uh, okay. The villain. Argh! Why are all Disney villains stereotypes? Just once I’d like to see the villain portrayed as a sort of tortured soul who wants to do right but always ends up doing wrong. No, I take that back. I don’t want Disney to do that. If they did, they’d make the “tortured soul” turn completely good at the end. Never mind that. I really like the song “A Whole New World.” It’s so much fun to play it on the piano and sing very loudly. Fun for me that is. I’m not sure my family agrees. I think their telling me to shut up is a rather large hint. Hmm…
Ah, Hercules. Have you seen this movie? Have you read his Wikipedia article? (Yes, I know Wikipedia isn’t always correct, but I use it anyway.) If you like movie Hercules, I wouldn’t suggest reading it. If you hate movie Hercules, go right ahead. You’ll just hate him more. Let me tell you something, non-movie Hercules was one freaky guy. I wouldn’t have wanted to know him. Back to the movie… It’s cute. I liked it more when I was young because of all the “modern” stuff they had. However, all that just annoyed me when I watched this recently. (If you’ve seen it, you’ll know what I’m talking about.) But something that I loved about the movie when I was young is something that I still love about the movie to this day. And it’s this song. Go on and listen to it. It’s awesome.
And thus I conclude my Disney talk. Maybe if I watch another animated Disney movie in the near future I can do another post like this. I’ve been having fun writing them.

Go check out the “Snippets” page. I’ve got the very last scene of my novel on there.
