“’cause when you’re fifteen, and somebody tells you they love you… August 30, 2009

…you’re gonna believe them.” ~ Fifteen, Taylor Swift

Being homeschooled seriously has its perks. For example, I did a couple classes Friday morning and then went over to a friend’s house to work on a duet we’re doing together. (Tonight. We’re performing tonight. Eek!) Well, we rehearsed for a while, and then I ended up staying for lunch. It was such a nice day. (Although very hot and humid.) But somehow it was nicer than most summer days, so my friend and I hopped in his car with his guitar and went to the park. We just sat around drinking Slurpees and talking. Nothing too exciting. He started strumming his guitar eventually, and I recognized the chorus of Taylor Swift’s “Fifteen.” Since that’s my favorite Taylor Swift song, I just had to sing along.  We weren’t be loud or anything, but someone walking past us heard us. This person says, “That’s a depressing song.”

Well…yeah. It’s sad. It’s real life though. Not everyone is walking around singing “Love Story.” Just sayin’.

Ah, these crazy teenage years. I was thinking, ya know. (Yes, yes. Dangerous.) If you were to ask anyone out of their teens when they had their biggest regret, most would say it happened in high school. There’s something about those four years in high school (whether your homeschooled or not) that just seem to leave a huge impression. Those four years in high school seem to leave you with the best and worst memories. Eghad. I’ve got another year to make some more best and worst memories. What? I’m not so optimistic to thing that nothing undesirable will happen in this last year of high school.

I’ve been writing lately. I’ve been writing a third draft of a certain novel. I’ve actually gotten somewhere with it, and I’m quite pleased with it so far. It’s drastically different in some areas. (Basically the whole plot.) But the same in others. (My main characters and their tumultous relationship with each other. I don’t think I could change that part. It wouldn’t be anything like the first two drafts otherwise.) Anyway, one of the characters is talking about life-defining moments and how they start happening at a very young age. It’s true, you know. I’m still very young. (I’m not 18 yet, therefore I am still very young. ;) ) I’ve had several moments already in life (whether they be good or bad) that have changed who I am, what I want to do in life, etc. It’s really kind of amazing when you think about it. One day you’re going to wake up and something is going to happen, and it’s going to change a part of you. Kind of a scary thought. Life doesn’t make static characters of us. Dynamic. Life makes us dynamic.

Profound. I think that those years are the life-changing/memorable ones because those are the years that we make mistakes, and we learn from them. It’s better that we make mistakes when we’re young, than when we’re old. That way we don’t give up. Youth have so much hope in them. It’s amazing to see. We have all the hope in the world, because we’re barely starting our lives! We can make things happen because we won’t give up when it goes wrong. Yay for being young!

“Fifteen” isn’t THAT depressing. Depends on what you mean by “depressing”, you know?

A certain novel…is it the novel that we want you to be writing? ;-)

College…college is weird.

I think “Fifteen” is more of a hopeful song than a depressing song. :) Good luck on your performance tonight!

Yesh, being young is a wonderful thing.

No, it’s not a depressing song, Anilee. I mean, part of it is sad, but it does have that hopefule note to it. I don’t know what that person was talking about. She probably didn’t even know what I was singing. ;)
Erm…it *might* be that novel. Okay, so it is. Amazing, huh? ;)

Thanks, Priya. It went well thankfully. :)

It is a mostly hopeful song, so yeah.

You know, if you need a beta reader…. ;-)

I’m serious, Jess. I need some productive way to procrastinate Calculus.
