Senior year started today August 25, 2009

Yeah, I’m a senior now. Yay me. No, seriously. I really do mean it. I am a very strange person who enjoys the structure of a school day. Sure, when my summer first began I loved the lack of structure. But summer went downhill in a few ways and I became desperate for the security of structure. So day one of being back to structure? It went pretty good. I like my classes this year. (With the exception of Physics.) I’m not sure how I feel about Calculus yet. So long as there’s a lot of Algebra involved, there’s a good chance I might end up enjoying it.

Anyhoo…

This summer. Well, it was a summer. No school. I went to a camp. (Which was totally epic, btw.) I did a lot of reading. I did very little writing. So yes. It was a summer. Next summer I’ll be preparing to go to school in South Carolina. I’ll be wondering if I’ll be forced to do a lot of reading that I don’t want to do since I’m planning on being an English major.

I had a random thought this morning. “This is my last first day of school in high school.” Scary/exciting. Scary because college will be a new experience, and I’ve been homeschooled my entire life. Exciting because I’m ready for a change like that. I wouldn’t have said that at the beginning of the summer, but I’ve done a lot of thinking on it since. I am ready for a change like that. I’m just not rushing it. I plan to enjoy senior year as it comes. I plan to enjoy next summer. I do look forward to college now. I keep insisting to people that I still have a year. However, those people just insist that this year will go by fast. Okay. I’m down with that. If it goes fast, that means I’ll be occupied. I want to be very, very occupied.

I’ve known my friend Amanda since the eight grade. She’s starting college in a week. She and I went out to dinner earlier, and we actually started composing a list together. We have giving it the oh so graceful title of “Jess and Amanda’s List of Crap-Filled Statements That People Use.” Well, the list is what the title says. It sounds depressing. Well, really it’s not. It’s actually quite hilarious. I mean, we’re coming up with all these sayings that we’ve heard hundreds of people use hundreds of time. It just goes to show you something. People can be so trite and insincere. Number one on our list is “I love you.” Let me ’splain. We’re mostly talking about teenagers. Amanda and I played softball with practically the same group of girls all through high school. Some of these girls we’re falling in and out of love every single week or month. They were giggling and whispering I love yous to different boys several times a month. Yeah, that’s love right there. Of course, that all just ties into the fickleness of people and why it’s probably better if teenagers just didn’t date, but that’s another story.

So if I could recap the summer with a word, it would be this:

Learn.

I learned a lot this summer. And because I learned, I changed a lot.

Well, taking it just one year at a time. So…senior year is here. Here’s hoping it goes well. ;)

People say the last year goes by really fast, but i didn’t think it went any faster than normal. It was pretty cool knowing it was the last year though. Enjoy it! My best friend took Calculus, and she had a love/hate relationship with it sort of. By the end, she loved it. So hopefully you will too. But why don’t you like Physics? I foudn it got easier the second year, because you’re building on things you already know. And some of the units are really easy because everything balances out, if that makes any sense. And you will be occupied, especially in the second half of the year. (Do you have semesters? I’m from Canada, and that’s the system we had.)

And as a side note, I’m going to be an English major too! Enjoy your last year of high school!

Maybe senior year went fast for me because I have this weird sense of time and EVERYTHING goes by so fast. Kind of annoying, actually. How is a procrastinator supposed to get any work done when time is against her? I ask you.

I sort of liked physics and calculus, but they are not easy subjects for a humanities girl to teach herself.

I have no idea what I’m majoring in. I’m not sure it’s going to be English. I kind of don’t want to be an English major.

Anyway…I didn’t really write this summer either.
